Conquering a Compact Kitchen

Today, we're covering a topic that many city dwellers know well – the compact kitchen. In the cozy confines of limited square footage, we're turning challenges into opportunities, proving that a compact kitchen can be a space for creativity and efficiency. We like to maintain a clutter-free countertop when we're not actively cooking. Use storage solutions like magnetic spice racks and under-cabinet baskets to keep everyday items organized. Here are additional tips for organizing a compact kitchen, especially tailored for renters who can’t apply permanent changes to the space.

  • Use Acrylic Organizers: Clear acrylic trays and bins are perfect for organizing items within cabinets and fridges. They keep things visible and accessible while maintaining order.
  • Utilize Tension Rods: Place tension rods under the sink or in cabinets to hang cleaning products or to organize trays and cutting boards vertically.
  • Add Under-Shelf Baskets: Maximize cabinet space by using under-shelf baskets, which can hold anything from napkins to snack bags without needing any tools for installation.
  • Employ Stackable Shelves: Double your shelf space by incorporating stackable shelves within cabinets or on countertops for additional vertical storage.
  • Use Magnetic Spice Containers: Save counter and cabinet space by using magnetic spice jars that can stick to the side of your refrigerator or on a metal strip mounted on the wall.
  • Opt for Rolling Carts: A rolling cart can serve as a portable pantry, extra counter space, or a coffee station. It’s versatile and can be tucked away when not needed.
  • Invest in Collapsible Items: Look for collapsible kitchen items like colanders, measuring cups, and dish racks to save space when not in use.
A compact kitchen is not a limitation; it's an invitation to get creative!

  • Implement Drawer Peg Systems: For deep drawers, a pegboard system allows you to customize and secure dish and pot placement, preventing clutter and damage.
  • Use the Inside of Cabinet Doors: Attach hooks, magnetic strips, or adhesive organizers inside cabinet doors to store utensils, pot lids, or spices.
  • Optimize Fridge Organization: Use bins and separators in the fridge to keep foods grouped and easily accessible, preventing items from being forgotten and going to waste.
  • Employ Bottle Organizers: Use bottle holders or stackers in the fridge or cabinets to keep bottles (like vinegars, oils, or drinks) organized and prevent them from taking up too much space.
  • Use Vertical Plate Holders: In cabinets, vertical plate holders can help save space and make dishes easier to grab.
  • Invest in Nesting Bowls and Cookware: Choose mixing bowls, pots, and pans that nest within each other to save cabinet space.
  • Implement Pull-out Bins: Use pull-out bins or drawers in cabinets to make accessing the back items easier, reducing clutter and disorganization.
  • Use Divider Bins for Snacks and Packets: Organize snacks, packets, and small items in clear bins or baskets in the pantry or cabinets, making it easier to see and grab what you need.
  • Add a Foldable Kitchen Island: If space allows, a foldable island can provide extra prep space and storage and can be folded and stowed away when not needed.
  • Buy a Credenza: You can use this for additional kitchenware storage for items you don’t use every day. The top of the credenza can double as a serving table when you have company, or be a surface for decorative items like picture frames, books, and flowers or plants.

Things to Avoid:

  • Wall-mounted Pot Racks and Magnetic Knife Strips: While this can free up cabinet and drawer space, it creates clutter and these items get dusty. Instead, opt for storing large pots and pans in the stove for storage.
  • Hanging Utensils: If your goal is to maintain a clean kitchen with tidy surfaces, then hanging your utensils may not be the right trick in a city apartment. To make drawer space, we suggest storing kitchen utensils in a flower vase or similar vessel. Something pretty or neutral will make your space look curated.
  • Behind the Door Racks: While helpful in creating floor space, these can also create clutter. If you have a pantry or closet door hiding your washer and dryer, opt for hanging brooms and other long stemmed cleaning tools there where they are out of the way.

Implementing these tips will help maximize the functionality and aesthetics of your kitchen without requiring permanent modifications or significant investments, making them perfect for renters looking to optimize their compact spaces. A compact kitchen doesn’t have to mean compromise. By integrating these tips, you can create a kitchen that is not only functional but also beautiful and free from clutter. Remember, every small space holds the potential for big style and efficiency – it’s all about making the right choices.
